Hi, I am very interested in teaching fashion design on-line. I have two degrees in fashion design. My last degree is from Syracuse University in NY. I am starting a ED.D. in on-line teaching. I am doing this to teach people fashion design and education on-line. Also, I would like to be employed at a University. Presently, I teach in South Korea, I am an American.

Well how about working with and/or asking the SLN to sponsor Introduction to Second Life for Teaching for SUNY faculty to participate in? I am sure they can work with the SUNY Research Foundation here at Buffalo State to arrange to use the BSC island for the SUNY virtual workshops.

When I attended the Project LIVE at Monroe Community College last Friday - a representative from the SLN asked specifically for advice on how to proceed from here. They seemed to want very much to support active involvement in Sl from SUNY faculty.

I plan on posting materials and audio/videos for anyone to use in their classes but as I said before - first hand experience is critical to fully understanding the potential of the environment.

Elaine, I wonder if you have any specific advice for us at FIT about how we proceed from here -- with a pilot perhaps, and I was thinking that perhaps we need to run some sessions "Getting Started in Second Life." What do you think?

Thanks Nyla, Elaine and Shenlei and Beth for this glimpse into the future.
We should learn to be flexible in this rapidly changing world.
The possibilities of SL are very exciting and could become a powerful outlet to expose our student’s creative talents.
I was just amazed by my students who adapted so quickly to creating avatars.
Remember this generation of students was brought up using technology that we never envisioned possible.

I was born in SL in March 2007, my niece Twiggy a graphic artist for Field Entertainment sent me the following E-mail message
“ You should do virtual designs! $60,000, can you believe that.” along
With an article from the The Washington Post and The New York Times

My mind started racing thinking about all the possibilities of SlN and how it could be beneficial to the education and career paths of our students.
Students could market their skills, set up their own showrooms and hold their own fashion shows. Departments could set up galleries and hold seminars. The possibilities are endless.
I ran around SL like a MAD Woman exploring the fashion places, art gallery, educational sites and stores like IBM Island, which has a Sears and Circuit City.

I decided to find out if the students were aware of SL by taking them online to the site and discussing how they could market their talent. Some of the students thought it was weird. One of the students told us how her brother was making money in SL and it was becoming his RL.

The following week, I learned that a few students created avatars and starting exploring SL.

Funny when I learned how to change appearance and clothing I wasn’t really concerned about what my avatar wore,
I was more interested in learning how to make the Avatar Clothing. I wanted to get a feel for how far designing clothing could be pushed. I did however succeed at designing my own clothing using the downloadable templates. Learning technologies are very time consuming and due to other commitments my interest in SL got pushed to the back shelf.
There isn’t anyone else that I know of in my department in SL, in fact my peers would ask me about my adventures.

I need to refresh my skills
And look forward to learning more about SL and creating avatar clothing.

Kudos to Elaine Polvinen, Buffalo State and the others mentioned in the Blog. .. thanks for sharing!

I am looking forward to the SL tour coming to FIT!

Students should learn to use Internet technologies constructively.

I introduced my students to SL last spring to make them aware of self-promotion and career opportunities in SL. I even taught myself how to make clothes for my avatar.

Thanks Beth for always exposing cutting edge educational technologies and renewing my interest in SL.
